Join Vandana for an hour long yoga class to celebrate International Day of Yoga. The children of ‘Jamghat’, a Non Profit that supports street children will be joining us from India. 100 % of proceeds from this class will go to those kids in keeping with the tenants of ‘Karma yoga’.
Jamghat is a Non-Profit organisation that has been working to advance the well being of street children for the last 17 years in Delhi, India. Jamghat is working at the grass-roots level and is connected directly with the community. Jamghat aims not only to provide the homeless a home, but also to equip them with the tools needed to be an able, independent and responsible member of society. Last year in 2019 Vandana went to Delhi and conducted a successful Diwali focused workshop with Jamghat’s children.
COVID-19 IN INDIA
No one was ready to face Covid-19 and the pandemic that followed. However the Indian Government announced a sudden lockdown which was life threatening for thousands of poor people. New Delhi, like other big cities in India, is a hub of migration from all across India. People leave their small towns and villages to look for employment and opportunities here. With the lockdown, buses trains and other forms of transportation was stopped. Daily wage earners like household help, construction workers, rickshaw pullers, street vendors and several others didn’t have any work, wages or home and were on the brink of starving. They had no choice but to try and walk thousands of miles to their homes on foot. Many died of starvation and exhaustion trying to carry their little kids and what they could on their backs.
As lockdown was declared in Delhi, Jamghat also had to close its office till the Government notified them they could open. But Jamghat's Board Members and founder-director, Amit Kumar Sinha decided to help people who were stuck in Delhi and were very poor. Jamghat started to raise funds to support DUSIB (Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board) to get dry rations and received some support from Corporates Institutions and individuals. Along with fundraising for relief work, Jamghat also started to provide dry rations, masks and personal care items to distressed families with the help of volunteers and community leader at several locations in Delhi.
With the lockdown extension Jamghat started getting information about more and more people who needed support and thus a unique way to help the distressed people through Jamghat Helpline was introduced. Information of the neediest families started coming through the strong network of Jamghat at the community level and Jamghat would transfer funds to shops located near those families so they could receive essential food items.
Since the lockdown Jamghat has supported around 5600 people of 1400 families by providing them dry rations, cooking fuel and other essentials.
No one will be turned away but please consider donating towards the homeless kids in Delhi and the work of Jamghat.
INDIAN CITIZENS can donate directly to Jamghat's account.
